No End In Sight

The winter weather continues and the days are monotonously cold.

What better way to spend a chilly afternoon?  Baking a loaf or two gives meaning to the day.

Just yesterday, I had a new experience in the studio.  After my heating guy finished tuning up the furnace in the house, he came out to apprise me of his findings.  While there, he admired the "coolness"  of my studio and asked if I had a pot he could take with him?  Preferably, a tray.  I offered up a lovely little tray, which I must admit was not priced, and handed it to him.  I had a quick moment of understanding as he tucked the tray into his overalls-he saw my offering as a gift.  I was so flabbergasted, I just watched him go without saying a word.  My initial thought was, "this is a guy who does not have handmade things in his life and here is a moment of clay karma."  Later, I wished I had found my voice and chastised him for even contemplating taking my work for free.  I woke in the middle of the night, missing my little tray and wishing for quicker wit.

Rather than obsessing, I realized a starting place had been marked for me, and I got to work making some more trays.  Here they are in process, draped over some wooden forms I made awhile back...

I also have a large plaster mold I have been carrying around for years.  I'm experimenting draping clay over the form and then adding a finishing coil around the rim once it stiffens up a bit.

Every time I make one, I find myself thinking that I could do a better job using the wheel, yet I"ll roll out another slab and make another attempt...  This is perhaps my twelfth one, so I am still at the beginning of figuring it out.

Lastly, here are some pants pots that will soon be home to succulent succulents... I group them into little families and arrange them on a tray, where they can grace a window sill together.  And, without too much thought, a new body of work has begun.

Someone recently asked me if I like making pots?  Again, I was at a loss for words, for the question seemed both alien and hard to answer.   My answer is, "Of course, or else my life choices would be ridiculous: however, my passions extend to cooking, plant life and changing the paint colors in my house.  It's enough to keep me busy and, at times, out of the studio, but I always return and I can feel a long, hard work cycle upon me-feel free to bring me dinner anytime!

interesting that he just tucked that pot away and took it home.
But maybe good things come from those unexpected moments.
Looks as if your are shaking off the cold and getting back to work.
It has been one COLD winter.
I am wishful for some warm weather!
