Recycling Day For Clay

This is my clay recycling station. First, I slake down the clay in a bucket with water. Next I shove the moist, sloppy clay through a screen, pictured in the back corner of the photo. Then I scoop up the clay, place it on top of a piece of canvas and wait for the sun to do the rest. Every now and again, I go out to roll it into a log. Once enough moisture leaves the clay, it's ready to be wedged and become a lovely clay object or, if this plan fails, the clay is returned to the slurry bucket and recycled again.
Over the weekend, our new neighbor, Phil, threw a party. I ended up giving several tours of the studio, sold some pots and discussed the merits of a wood fired pizza oven with his guests. Phil says next time, he plans to take a commission...

Hi Renee! I love soft pliable reclaimed clay, but sometimes you really have to work for it!... Sounds like Phil is a great neighbor!

I love soft, pliable clay too, and after avoiding recycling clay for years, (yes, I have even thrown clay away rather than recycle-I'm ashamed to admit) I am actually enjoying it. I guess I never had a station set up in the past, but the red bench works well.

Phil is a good neighbor and his friends were so complimentary.

I thought you'd be driving cross country by now...what an epic trip. Is it for pleasure or work?

I used to toss mine out too, but figure I've saved so much coin that I feel like I can really experiment with the reclaimed clay. Like it's a gift somehow!

We leave on Oct. 9 for our trip to North Carolina. Flying to Asheville and staying with our friends, another pottery couple. It's a combination of work and pleasure! So much to do between now and then!
